I am actually a programmer, but without real experience in kernel-hacking, and I also do not know how the ALSA subsystem works in general. Would probably take longer to see through this then somebody else - with experience in this area - fixing it in an afternoon. But I would help if anyone would just provide some idea where to start. But I also really do not understand why this issue does not receive any attention. I guess the sound input just does not work in Ubuntu on at least 50% of laptops used today!
