Marcus,
I read the same problem in Ubuntu-es forum, with that kernel update in Hardy
and a Compaq Presario F700 (with Atheros AR5007EG).
The aparently solution is:
- Boot in recovery into kernel 2.6.24-21-generic
- Uninstall de madwifi driver with:
   - cd madwifi_directory (madwifi-ng-r2756+ar5007 or another version, like
madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6)
   - sudo make uninstall
- Then install de linux-backports-modules for your kernel version. With this
package you can use the wifi using the ath5k driver: run
- sudo modprobe ath5k
if it's necesary.
