This bug appears to be fixed in Kubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) Beta. I couldn't elicit the bug using kate 4:4.1.2-0ubuntu1 on an amd64 machine. Particlese, would you please check to see if the bug goes away for you with the aforementioned version kate? Hopefully we can mark this as fixed!
