Disregard my modified packages. It seems that it is not as simple as I thought to move the devices out of /dev/mapper. I spent a few hours trying to debug it last night and I concluded that it will take a lot more work to make this happen, so I won't bother.
Based on my IRC discussions with Richard Bailey, it sounds like in addition to the boot time lvm script, the installer incorrectly recognizes the dmraid evices as LVM volumes, and takes inappropriate action with them that prevents installation from continuing.
