After reinstalling 8.04 for the third time, I made sure not to run any of the 
security updates. However, on restart the same thing happened (no desktop on 
login), so it seems the problem is not in the security updates, but in the 
upgrade/installation itself. Since I couldn't get 8.04 to work I reverted to 
7.10, so any log files were deleted.

I have 8.04 on my desktop and there it works fine.
