Just tried -- makes no difference, even after restarting OOo. In any case, the 1s redraw time I mentioned may be exaggerated. It's a split second, but long enough to notice and certainly long enough to capture mid drawing.
I suspect the video driver is misconfigured, since I only get ~500fps in glxgears with or without Compiz.
