Actually I think I have a more general problem. When I am log'ed in to
gnome and insert an audio cd into my plextor px-40ts scsi cd-rom drive.
I am told that theres i no audio tracks on, but I can then go to a
terminal and as root rip it with the 10.2 version of cdparanoia

A wild guess is that the way to read audio cd's from this cd-rom drive
is denied by something(because I can only use cdparanoia as root - and
only the 10.2 version and not the 10.0 ubuntu version). I can read data
cd's without problems in this drive
