Just to be sure, this is listed under Ubuntu, you did an Ubuntu install (on vbox) and then overloaded with KDE (via a dummy package?) or did you in fact install Kubuntu initially?
Would you mind installing gdm (and switching to it in the config dialog) then apt-get-purging kdm. Reboot to check gdm runs OK then reinstall kdm to make sure the config dialog is displayed. Finally reboot to check KDM is properly operative again.
