Public bug reported:

I downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 Beta to test on my computers and it failed to
start the wired network interface

I tested on a HP 6910 P and on a HP DC 7800p Desktop. Both have Intel Gigabit 
Ethernet interfaces 
this is the hardware report for the network card  from the DC 7800p that is 
running Ubuntu 8.04 right now 
Intel Corporation 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection (rev 02)


The notebook  has an Intel  core 2 duo T8300 @ 2.40GHz  1.96GB RAM  and reports 
teh sam Intel 82566MM Gigabit Network Card 

Although Ubuntu recognizes the card it doesn't appear to be configured.
