In the process of back tracing, I installed libgstreamer0.10-0
(0.10.18-4ubuntu2). And now the problem seems to be solved.

For the record: My graphics card is ATI readon X1950 Pro with CCC driver 8.5
Desktop effects turned off.
Also, when I followed the guide for back tracing, I stopped at "sudo
apt-get install yelp-dbgsym=2.22.1-0ubuntu2.8.04.1", because this step
depends on yelp (=2.22.1-0ubuntu2) but 2.22.1-0ubuntu2.8.04.3 is
installed and necessary for a lot of other programs (such as FireFox
3). In other words, you can't really install yelp-dbgsym...

libgstreamer0.10-0 (0.10.18-4ubuntu2) was automatically marked for
upgrade (previous was libgstreamer0.10-0 (0.10.18-4ubuntu1)), and after
installed, (at least) Totem and VLC simply close when starting a video.
You might be able to glimpse one frame. I've tested the YouTube plugin
and 3gp file for Totem and 3gp file for VLC.
Terminal output is this:

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.

that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
To resolve the problem for now: downgrade libgstreamer0.10-0
(0.10.18-4ubuntu2) to libgstreamer0.10-0 (0.10.18-4ubuntu1).
