Found the culprit: An extraneous cdrom entry in fstab for the /dev/sdb1
device. After commenting out the line from /etc/fstab, the automounting
worked.

** Description changed:

On Edgy, clean install. Strangely, the same stick works on another
laptop, also running Edgy, that had a clean install of Edgy Beta(?)
  upgraded.
+
+ pmount fails, but sudo mount works.
