I downloaded the NVidia driver from http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_177.80.html, killed the running X server, installed the driver, and ran 'startx'. I mean, while we're using proprietary binary drivers and not worrying about packages (because it's just a livecd), why not splurge? Besides, the NVidia drivers will compile themselves against any recent kernel version and then autoconfigure Xorg. It doesn't get any easier than that.
