Further debugging -- no answers

I added a line to my gdm init script to list the names of all the
services on the GDM system bus. In both situations the lists is
basically identical. I think this rules out dbus_bus_name_has_owner()
failing. The command line is:

dbus-send --print-reply --system
--dest=org.freedesktop.DBus /org/freedesktop/DBus
org.freedesktop.DBus.ListNames

And the results are attached.
