I have made an attempt to summarize the situation with a new description

** Description changed:

- I am running on a Dell 1420 laptop with an nvidia 8400 video card, using
- the latest updates to the 64bit version of Intrepid Ibex. When I'm in X
- (KDE or even just KDM) the cooling fan spins all the time. The air
- coming from it isn't hot or anything it just blows all the time. If I
- switch to a console (not log out, just press CTR+ALT+F1) the fan stops
- spinning. When I switch back to X then the fan starts spinning again.
- If I run X with the open source "nv" driver then the fan works as
- expected (it's off unless the CPU is under load). Also, the previous
- driver didn't do this, and that was version 177.60 (I believe).
+ This bug affects mainly Dell 1420 and Dell XPS M1330 laptops, but
+ potentially also other laptops with the Nvidia GeForce 8400 graphics
+ chipset.

- The nvidia driver version is 177.80.
+ Upgrading from previous versions of the Nvidia driver to 177.80 causes
+ the fan to spin constantly or almost constantly. Reverting to 177.76 or
+ 173 stops the incessant fan activity. This is not a problem outside an X
+ session.

- Lonnie Blansett
+ Upgrading to a newer BIOS (at least A12) seems to have stopped the fan
activity for at least some users. Instructions for upgrading the Dell BIOS can
be found here:
+
+ There is suspicion that this might be related to faulty Nvidia cards
overheating, as reported here:
