I'm also affected by this shutdown issue and I also hear no sound.
I tried the changes suggested by Daniel. Nothing changed.
In : System > Preferences > Sound, when I hit thetTest button while "ALI
5451 ALI 5451 (Alsa)" is selected I have this error :
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink profile=music: Could not open audio device for playback.
I hear no sound when choosing any other option including PulseAudio.
It may be related to something else than to alsa-utils.
Version : 8.10 : 2.6.27-7.13-generic
In "sudo lspci -v":
