Thanks for your reply. Basically, things have gone from bad to worse
and I haven't got back to the point where I encountered this bug yet.
I eventually gave up on the system where these problems occurred,
because I upgraded [to a Dell XPS 420]. My old computer had an ATI
All-In-Wonder Pro 32Mb video card, which may have been part of the
problem.

I've been trying to install 8.04 on my IBM Thinkpad x22 with no result
[keeps hanging during repartioning for some reason], but if I
encounter this problem again [since a few others have experienced
this] I will report it.
