from the strace you pasted, i see that it cannot find the file usb.ids, which
matches vendor:device id pairs to human-readable strings:
open("./usb.ids", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
can you check the existence of the file /var/lib/misc/usb.ids ?
if not, try removing and re-installing the package usbutils...
