In my comment of 17 April ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24/+bug/214165/comments/5 ) I noted that I'd fixed this problem by shutting down X and turning off the monitor power, then turning it back on again.
This problem has never re-occurred since then. My conclusion, at least for my original problem, is that it was some kind of hardware setting glitch in the monitor rather than anything related to the software. From my perspective I no longer have this bug and it could be closed.
