definitely not working now.
ubuntu developers seems to be good at knocking out users using 242x atheros.
First when I installed 8.10 snapshot one month ago, all I needed to do to get
wifi working was to disable (quite absurd!?) atheros drivers in hardware
drivers.
After recent update when ath5k module was got rid of and substituted by
mac80211 (which does not support 242x) the 8.10 users don't have any option
anymore.

I understand the trend to get things working in more elegant way (e.g.
hal drivers), but I don't think it's ok to left users without choice
which drivers for wifi to use. Is it really that big problem to ship new
kernel package for intrepid with ath5k compiled as module?
