Hi Bryce I eventually found in one of the forums that this is a relatively long standing issue and that there is a fix which I forget what it was. I think this is rather poor that this issue has been known about for some time yet no effort is made to fix the operating system software. It is not confined to the Sony monitor, but is far more general and my son had a similar problem with Ubuntu using quite different hardware.
This is a criticism I have with Kubuntu/Ubuntu, that there are numerous little time consuming issues eg have you ever tried using the live update for the operating system? I have for several generations and have never been able to make it work. In the end I have decided that it is too frustrating and time consuming for a relatively inexperienced person to use K/U and have gone back to windows XP with Comodo and Spybot, a combination that works well and is easily understood. Best of luck for the future. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com) If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Thanks in advance. The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having. ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- cannot select sonyg420 monitor default res unusable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/241190 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. Status in "xorg" source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: There is no driver for Sony g420 monitor (there used to be in Gutsy) consequently a very low non adjustable resolution is set by default. This cannot be changed in "settings, monitor " This is so bad as to render the system unusable. eg I cannot burn dvds because I cannot get at the appropriate buttons in the dialog box to do so. Resizing merely changes the width of the dialog box in KB3 but cannot change the height. To me the 8.04 version of Kubuntu is a very large backward step since for me it is unusable. ddcontrol has been updated, trying to run LANG= LC_ALL= ddcontrol -p -c -d does not work. It will not run. Am I the only one who uses high quality crt monitor?
