I experienced the same black screen problem as originally described using the edgy 386 live cd, and like the others already mention, ctrl+alt+F1 through F6 does NOT bring up any console.
I tried both : the default Start/Install and the safe mode. None of them worked. I tried also at that time various option like noacpi but none works. Remark : In Ubuntu 6.06 (dapper), the default Start/Install was not working but the safe mode was working fine.
