Hi,
This problem was caused (as described) by interruption in running dpkg command.
dpkg is launched whenever something is done with packages: installing,
uninstalling, reconfiguring. Most likely Synaptic was interrupted, and dpkg
couldn't finish configuring newly installed packages.
As a result dpkg cache is inconsistent and you see "E:_cache->open()" problem.
To fix this problem you should simply run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" and
provide your password. After that you will be able to use synaptic for managing
your software again.
I'm changing the status of this bug to "invalid" as this is not really bug, but
local problem.
