As mentioned, this reduces the time involved by quite a bit, and also
adds a better progress message (unfortunately untranslated; also not any
kind of progress stepping, which will have to be for later if
necessary). I think this is a reasonable set of workarounds for 8.10,
but we should revisit this for Jaunty.
