fglrx is working now, too. After some testing I'm satisfied that this bug no longer exists. To get fglrx working (and indeed the radeon driver) I first had to purge several packages and reinstall them:
apt-get purge fglrx-modaliases fglrx-amdcccle fglrx-kernel-source xorg- driver-fglrx xorg-driver-fglrx-dev Perhaps that was all that was needed all along. The new versions: xorg: 1:7.4~5ubuntu3 xorg-driver-fglrx: 2:8.543-0ubuntu4 linux-restricted-modules-generic: 2.6.27.7.11 blender: 2.46+dfsg-4 I also tested with Blender SVN (2.48a, rev 17195M) and the bug isn't present there any more either. Thanks very much! This will make blending a lot easier.
