Public bug reported:

hello.

when i switched on my pc this morning i noticed there were some updates,
so i set about letting the update manager run, which went without a
problem, it installed some updates relating to the hal (i think) as i
said all went well.

i then restarted my system, things to do and all that, only when it re-
started i logged in as usual, only all i got was the loading icons (kde
4.1) and a black screen, the only other things viewable were the mouse
cursor and oddly 2 karamba themes which i use, and that was it.

so i restarted the system and selected recovery mode, i then selected
the " try to fix xserver " (i figured it was an issue with the display)
upon logging back in, i found that the desktop would load, themes etc,
however i was not able to use any effects, so i enabled the effects and
when i restarted i was back tot he black screen i mentioned above, so i
did the recovery mode again, and when i logged in i did " sudo nvidia-
settings " in terminal and was presented with the message that i was not
using the nvidia driver, and to fix it run " nvidia-xconfig " as root
(if i do this i get the black screen again)

so it seems that i cant use the latest nvidia driver (177.80) after the last
updates, i also noticed that some icons were missing from the main menu, those
being the fusion-icon (although adept says its installed, i can run it, but
because i cant use the 3d drive i get nothing from it)
i also noticed that the hardware item is missing from the system menu (this you
use to see what drivers you are running) there are some others as well, but it
seems that anything related to the hal is not working correctly and for some
reason i cant use the nvidia driver.

Im running the beta of intrepid (kubuntu), and apart from a bluetooth issue all
was working well until i updated this morning.
if there is a way to find out what was updated this morning please let me know
so i can provide more info, also if more info is needed please tell what i need
to do (including logs etc) and i will update as needed, all i can remember
about the updates is that they were to do with the hal (hardware abstraction
layer)
cheers
