Public bug reported:

Users wishing to install Ubuntu in a VMware Fusion VM have a need for
VMware Tools, including a set of kernel modules that must be compiled
for the running kernel. One way to do this is with the open-vm-source,
-tools, and -toolbox packages that are present in Debian testing
(Lenny), but which are absent in the Ubuntu repositories. Yet, these
packages install without much trouble in Intrepid (my installation from
the ubuntu-8.10-rc-desktop-amd64.iso). Most dependencies are already
available in the Intrepid repositories, except that the libxcb-render-
util0 package is a bit outdated.

My installation (in this precise order):
1. Download the open-vm-source, open-vm-tools, and open-vm-toolbox packages
from the Debian Lenny repository, as well as the libxcb-render-util0 package.
2. Install the module-assistant, debhelper and dpatch packages.
3. Install the downloaded open-vm-source package with the "sudo dpkg -i"
command.
4. Compile/install the modules with the "sudo m-a a-i open=vm" command.
5. Install the libdumbnet1 package.
6. Install the downloaded open-vm-tools package with "sudo dpkg -i".
7. Install the downloaded libxcb-render-util0 package with "sudo dpkg -i".
8. Install the downloaded open-vm-toolbox package with "sudo dpkg -i".

That's it, the modules are now loaded and the "sudo vmware-toolbox"
command can now be used to shrink the virtual HD in place.

Is there any reason why the above packages, and perhaps the compiled
module package, cannot be part of Intrepid? There must be many MacIntel
owners wishing to run Ubuntu in a VMware Fusion VM.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
