Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usplash

I have a Toshiba Satellite A110-180, with an Intel 945GM graphics card. When
choosing to shutdown, reboot or even suspend (hibernate is not affected) in
KDE, sometimes the screen gets black and the computer hangs. It shuts down or
reboots correctly if I end the KDE session first and then shutdown/reboot in
KDM. Also works if doing it via console (shutdown -h now), but I prefer using
the KDM method since it shuts down KDE properly.
Some of these times, when shutting down, the screen gets black, then fades to
white, green and then purple, like if it got corrupted, and then goes black
again.
When shutdown works (I haven't been able to reproduce a way in which shuts down
and another in which it doesn't), Usplash displays for some seconds a grey
screen or a grey screen full of "é" characters, and then displays the progress
bar correctly.

All these issues are gone if I disable the "splash" option in GRUB. Then
the computer always shuts down, reboots and suspends correctly,
independently from the method used.

** Affects: usplash (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
