I hope the following information helps people with this issue: Dell's Wiki has instructions on repairing the audio after an upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04. I think this problem is only exists for people who have the hsfmodem (3rd party) package installed, which only comes on Dell's version of Ubuntu (modified image). This should not apply to people who have installed Ubuntu from the CD image provided by Canonical.
