Can I confirm Ian Ellis's comments. The 'scratch' part of the problem only occurs to me running rdesktop that remotes sound to my desktop, eg warning bell. This appears to confuse everything and I have to reboot totally. It does loop sound from Rythmbox not the desktop. If I am not running rhythmbox with rdesktop it works fine and if I run rhythmbox it seems to work fine.
I am suspicious that the crashing rhythmbox is a corrupt song in my collection.
