Looks like this bug won't be fixed for intrepid final. I have a hunch that most users upgraded their existing ubuntu installation instead of doing a clean installation, which is why this bug wasn't spotted earlier.
In any case, I'll test my system with Intrepid-Beta to see if this was a recent regression. @Wilfredo: You have to use the text based install (ubuntu alternate cd). Even then, there's a chance that Xorg after the system is installed.
