Just for the record, today's formal release of Ubuntu 8.10 is even worse. After a lot of attempts, a LiveCD session fails to load on my E4600 [B] rig, and when installed instead can only be ShutDown or ReStarted by switching off the PC. Instead of dwelling for three minutes at failure to close ALSA, it now simply stops with a blank screen and a winking cursor. I'm restoring Ubuntu 8.04.1 and will try to close this Bug Report and in due course raise a new one for Ubuntu 8.10 formal release.
