Sorry, what is a red herring? Also, why is this only 'wishlist'? This is a major usability bug in my opinion, as sound input SHOULD work out of the box with absolutely no configuration needed. The average linux novice should not have to jump through hoops to get something as basic as sound input working on a desktop oriented distribution.
