Ben wrote on 2008-10-29: "I had the same problem on my thinkpad. I was able to solve this just by killing the pulse audio process using the System Monitor. I also unchecked PulseAudio in the Preferences-->Sessions dialog box to make sure it didn't come back on reboot."
