Well... the housekeeping didn't help - the install still crashed. I guess the failure is due to trying to use an existing grub boot partition. I have some crash reports to append tomorrow.
I have just run a successful install onto an inode=128 partition, but it was necessary to let the installer put /boot on the same partition as the rest of the system.
