Here is the output of pulseaudio --dump-conf . The problem seem to have something to do with http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5956390#post5956390 . I get the same error from pulseaudio --version that ShirishAg75 reported in that thread, and my .xsession-errors contains the following:
