Here is the output of pulseaudio --dump-conf .

The problem seem to have something to do with
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5956390#post5956390 . I get the
same error from pulseaudio --version that ShirishAg75 reported in that
thread, and my .xsession-errors contains the following:

ALSA lib pcm_pulse.c:629:(pulse_prepare) PulseAudio: Unable to create stream:
Invalid argument

Failed to play sound: IO error
Initializing nautilus-share extension
seahorse nautilus module initialized

** (nautilus:5381): WARNING **: Unable to add monitor: Not supported
gnome-session[5277]: WARNING: Application 'libcanberra-login-sound.desktop'
failed to register before timeout

Also, /var/log/messages contains this:

Oct 31 02:34:55 leo-desktop pulseaudio[5341]: ltdl-bind-now.c: Failed to find
original dlopen loader.
Oct 31 02:34:56 leo-desktop pulseaudio[5343]: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE,
(31, 31)) failed: Operation not permitted
Oct 31 02:34:56 leo-desktop pulseaudio[5343]: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_RTPRIO,
(9, 9)) failed: Operation not permitted
Oct 31 02:49:32 leo-desktop pulseaudio[5343]: protocol-esound.c:
pulsecore/protocol-esound.c: Failed to create sink input.
Oct 31 02:53:02 leo-desktop pulseaudio[5343]: protocol-esound.c:
pulsecore/protocol-esound.c: Failed to create sink input.
Oct 31 03:23:07 leo-desktop pulseaudio[5343]: protocol-esound.c:
pulsecore/protocol-esound.c: Failed to create sink input.

Note that unlike https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=438284 ,
pulseaudio is running, and pulseaudio -D does nothing:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ pulseaudio -D
W: ltdl-bind-now.c: Failed to find original dlopen loader.
E: main.c: daemon startup failed.
