I have the same or a similar problem.  It is most evident when I use the
arrow keys to move the text cursor around.  Usually see a lot of
vertical bars--very irritating because they mask the current cursor
position since they look like additional cursors !  I change
fonts/subpixel smoothing options and it won't go away.  I am using
ubuntu 8.04, evolution 2.22.3.1.   I am using the nvidia driver AMD64,
compiz, 1680x1050 resolution (not sure that matters).  I hate writing
email with this bug...  I'm going to try disabling the nvidia driver and
see if it goes away.  Not that I think that this is an acceptable
workaround--HARDLY, but it would add another datapoint.
