Sorry I did not reply before. Indeed, feel free to close the bug. It was actually a problem with package installation that I understand is being addressed in other ways.
The gist is that I shut down my computer while I was installing packages (I had to for one reason or another). I assumed that the package installer would exit properly, but actually it did not. When I booted up later, I tried to resume package installation, but the package that I was in the middle of installing when the shutdown began had only partially installed. This left bad information in the "file list" associated with the package, and messed up dpkg in a number of ways. I could no longer add or remove packages. In the end, I figured out where the "file list" for the packages are stored, and removed the entries for the erring package. I was then able to correctly remove the package, and reinstall it. I believe I have read that this problem is being address through the use of ConsoleKit to make sure that the session shutdown is aware of running package managers. Thanks for your help.
