Also, I experience a similar problem on my Averatec 3280 laptop, which has a VIA Technologies, Inc. S3 Unichrome Pro VGA Adapter (rev 01). Again, the output of the S3 adapter appears never to be right for the display, even trying low-graphics mode. (I'm typing this report on the same computer, running Debian 4.0, by the way) (Again, I'm trying to run the desktop 8.10 disk as a live CD). The hack of using the xorg.conf file from an earlier version of Ubuntu doesn't work in this case as well, since I can't get to a console to copy the file.
I have an earlier bug report regarding the same laptop, bug #186103, trying to install with an alternate install disk for Hardy. The problem appears to be the same.
