Using the nm-applet and network manager GUI, I am unable to properly
configure a static network config. I have seen several failures in this
config.
I am unsure whether this bug exists in the front or back end of network
manager, and don't have the time or inclination to track that down.
-sometimes it reverts to DHCP when the machine is booted and idle, changing IP
addresses from the static configuration
-after a reboot, it failed to properly configure the DNS settings even though
static settings had previously been entered. When I went back to the GUI, the
name server and search domain had been "forgotten"
-attempts to use a static configuration by manually editing
/etc/network/interfaces and /etc/resolv.conf fail if nm-applet is allowed to
run.

I expected my network and DNS settings to be used.

The system reverted to default behaviors, or in the case of DNS
settings, didn't use anything at all.
The workaround is to disable the network manager and configure
/etc/network/interfaces and /etc/resolv.conf manually.
