Sorry, I figured it out ( by accident) . If I go into computer/file
system/ and right click on the folder I want to open, select properties
and go to the "opens with" tab I see that the folder is set to open with
gedit. I change it to "open folder" and it works fine.  Where this was
only a problem after the upgrade I didn't completely understand the
problem. I'll be posting this in the forums in a bit for others who, 
like me, lacking experience find simple solutions are sometimes like
pulling teeth.

Try to find buggy config.
One by one copy files from old_user to working_user (.* dirs). When bug
returned - upload config here.

Bug description:
Binary package hint: gedit

Release ubuntu 8.10  with gedit version 2.24.0-ubuntu1 and gedit common version
2.24.0-ubuntu1

Expected to happen: When clicking on the places menu, the Documents, Pictures
or Music folder the folder should  open in a window showing the folder contents.

What did happen: When clicking on the folder, a gedit window opens and displays
this message
/home/my directory/Documents is a directory
please check that you typed the location correctly and try again.
