Sorry, I figured it out ( by accident) . If I go into computer/file system/ and right click on the folder I want to open, select properties and go to the "opens with" tab I see that the folder is set to open with gedit. I change it to "open folder" and it works fine. Where this was only a problem after the upgrade I didn't completely understand the problem. I'll be posting this in the forums in a bit for others who, like me, lacking experience find simple solutions are sometimes like pulling teeth.
