Public bug reported:

When I booted up my Ubuntu 6.10, gnome booted up to the background but
the splash screen did not start up and gnome freezed up. I pressed
ctrl+alt+backspace. Gnome died but did not start up. I was able to
startx from the command line from tty1, but gdm, apt-get and shutdown
commands brought a "illegal instruction" message to the command line and
the above commands would not execute.
