Public bug reported:

I had Xubuntu 8.04 running on my computer when I decided to upgrade to
the new 8.10. I followed the instructions on the Ubuntu site, installing
all other updates first. The upgrade seemed to complete without errors,
but when I boot the machine, the login screen doesn't show up. Instead
only the "x" cursor shows up in the middle of the screen (one time
changing to a clock or something and then staying in that state), but it
does not respond to the mouse, seemingly locked.
