teej, have you tried with 32-bit Ubuntu Intrepid?

Also, I don't know if it's possible, but try in BIOS to disable
unnecessary devices and set SATA to compatible/legacy (or enhanced for
change). And make your CPU to use one core and disable any
hyperthreading/virtualization/whatever options (if possible)! You know,
minimalise it :)

Finally, try booting off 64-bit or 32-bit cds along with these two boot
options (together): noapic pci=noacpi
