The installation of the upgrade to 8.10 proceeded smoothly for
almost two hours. I monitored the progress closely, because there
always seem to be requirements for attention, like questions that
pop up on the screen. The estimated-time-remaining counted down to
one minute, then the estimation was removed since the process was
about to finish.

The install of wvdial was noted, and then nothing happened.
Twenty minutes later, I had the impression that no further progress
was going to happen. I did not know if there are any commands that
would skip that step and continue, otherwise I expected to have to
power off and back on. ctrl+c was the first keystroke that had any
effect.

The installation continued, then discovered that wvdial had not
completed it's install, and offered to retry that step. I approved,
and the same wvdial install statement appeared. I waited over ten
minutes before using ctrl+c again.

The installation completed, without doing any cleanup or reboot.
I shut down Ubuntu normally, then powered off and back on.
The system appeared to boot normally.

This computer does not have a modem.

I note that wvdial is a modem program, so it did not seem that the
installation should require any more time than the other packages.
If wvdial requires a long time to compete the installation, I would
suggest a note be added that alerts the user.

I recall a similar problem when upgrading in spring 2008, with the
wvdial installation occurring earlier. I had to burn a CD and do
a complete installation.

I am a novice Linux user, and am using this computer to get some
experience. I apologize if my actions were not appropriate.

Thanks,
Mykle Raymond
