with the system76 driver 2.2.7 and ubuntu 8.10 I observe the same symptoms: tap sort of works, but tpconfig dignostics is broken # tpconfig -3 --middle-button Found Synaptics Touchpad. Firmware: 8.96 (multiple-byte mode). 2 button mode; corner tap is right button click. 2 button mode; corner tap is right button click.
