Just found out that Compiz itself is also not without any problems: When you do Alt-Tab the icons in the lower right corner of the minimized windows are sometimes distorted.
Having done one more experiment: Turning off Compiz, Google Earth becomes somewhat usable again and the glxgears canvas doesn't stay on top if I move another window over it. On the other hand, the performance of 3D rendering is still as bad.
