I've tried the current upstream stable version 1.4.21b with even worse
results. strace reports 1749 fsyncs on first startup and shutdown after
all feeds are initially loaded.

Unsuccessfully digging around for a workaround. I found that sqlite3 hard-codes
the "safety_level" to full-sync and liferea keeps that setting at its defaults,
i.e. doesn't make use of pragma synchronous.
There seems to be no remedy apart from patching the source.
