This is still a current problem with Hardy 32 bit 8.04.1 all updates 2nd Nov 08.
I am using a Compaq Presario CQ50-110EM. Enabling the nVidia restricted drivers in Hardware Drivers breaks X. After enabling them and rebooting, after the usplash screen, where the desktop normally starts up to the GDM screen there is just a black screen and it appears that the entire PC/laptop stopped responding.
