TEST CASE:
on a system without perl / perl-modules (only with perl-base) such as minimal
virtual machine as created by ubuntu-vm-builder:
% perl -e 'use warnings "all"; chr(hex(323)) =~ /\p{IsAlpha}/'
Use of uninitialized value $x in scalar assignment at
/usr/share/perl/5.10/utf8_heavy.pl line 242.
Use of uninitialized value $x in pattern match (m//) at
/usr/share/perl/5.10/utf8_heavy.pl line 243.

the warnings go away when installing perl + perl-modules.
