I tried this again on Intrepid with today's updates. The machine hibernates very successfully.
The machine suspends. On resume, the machine starts up (I can hear fans and perhaps the hard disk), but the monitor stays asleep, and the USB/Bluetooth keyboard remains disconnected, like its dongle is not powered up.
